All We Are Saying - Buzzwords 2007 »
The New York Times has a good list of buzzwords for 2007. One of my favorites which I first read about in an issue of Wired:
bacn n.
Impersonal e-mail messages that are nearly as annoying as spam but that you have chosen to receive: alerts, newsletters, automated reminders and the like.

Australia Joins China In Censoring The Internet »
Duncan Riley:
How far “inappropriate material” may extend was not made clear, for example questioning Government policy where it comes to Aboriginal people could be deemed to be discrimination under Australian law and hence blocked by the censorship regime. Worst still, bloggers or those (such as forum owners) who allow users to comment or post could find themselves blocked under this proposal should someone say or post the wrong thing.

AOL To Discontinue Netscape Browser Development »
Michael Arrington:
Please observe a moment of silence for the Netscape browser. Netscape Navigator, the browser that launched the commercial Internet in October 1994, will die on February 1, 2008.

Internet Explorer 8 Passes Acid2 »
Coming hot on the heels of Opera’s antitrust complaint, Dean Hachamovitch announces IE8 correctly renders Acid2 in standards mode.
Dean Hachamovitch:
For IE8, we want to communicate facts, not aspirations. We’re posting this information now because we have real working code checked in and we’re confident about delivering it in the final product.
“Confident” about delivering it in the final product and delivering it in the final product are two different things. Still great news though.

$8,000-Per-Gallon for Ink Leads to Lawsuit »
Ars Technica’s Ryan Paul:
The price of ink for HP ink-jet printers can be as much as $8,000 per gallon, a figure that makes gas-pump price gouging look tame.

Layer Tennis: Owens vs. Gnewikow »
Today’s match is not for the epileptic, but with an intro like this from Joshua Allen:
Dudes, who here loves getting their Civil War re-enactments on? Show of hands.
Don’t even be shy about how you like to slowly buckle your cavalry saber and almost erotically apply your huge fake mustache and then head on down to the parking lot behind Applebee’s to rain some Antietam down on goddamn Mitch from Sales.
How could you not be pumped?

New 'Get a Mac' Commercials »
The “Santa Claus” commercial in the Rankin/Bass style is fantastic.
Opera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft »
In an open letter to the web community, Håkon Wium Lie, CTO of Opera writes:
We believe that Microsoft has harmed Web standards by refusing to support them; Microsoft often participates in creating Web standards, promoting them, and even promising to implement them. Despite their talent, however, they refuse to support Web standards correctly. For example, Internet Explorer is the only modern Web browser that does not support Acid2.
In a presentation I gave recently, I had a section on the multiple browsers we have to develop for and how Internet Explorer continues to be the most problematic. I think we (as designers and tech geeks) get wrapped up in what we know so much, we forget that the general public has no concept of Web Standards and what they mean.
The biggest point of that conversation that hit home with my audience—those paying the bills for the websites, not those designing them—was that developing for Internet Explorer increases the development cost of your website. And that hit home.

Just What's on the Page »
I had a hard time deciding which video to link to from the Speechless campaign because they’re all so good. This one really drives the point home though (and it doesn’t hurt that it has the most star power).

Julian Beever's New 3D Sidewalk Paintings »
I’ve always found Julian Beever’s sidewalk art amazing. I’d love to be able to see these pieces in person. Taking The Plunge and Batman and Robin have to be two of my favorites.

Kottke on Feed Reading »
Kottke:
I find that grouping feeds by mode helps greatly. And by mode, I mean when I’m reading link blogs, that’s a different style than reading/skimming long-form blogs in the Always folder.
Reading this was one of those “why didn’t I think of that” moments. Now off to reorganize my feeds.
